Read this rubric carefully and know what is required for a 100% essay. Don't go back and forth trying to guess what is right. Know for sure what you need to do to get the highest grade.

Remember:
1)  All essays must be typed or a maximum of 25% of the possible points will be given.
2)  You must double space or lose points.
3)  Going over the number of pages allowed = minus 20 points per page.
4)  Use 12 font or larger
5)  Essays are due at the beginning of class and must be turned in to me personally.  Essays will not be accepted at the house office or in my house mail box!

To acheive an "A" short essay: * Clearly establishes a main topic with an engaging thesis statement or paragraph. always stays on topic. * Supports the main points with excellent reasoning and many insightful examples and/or ideas. * Correctly uses a variety of sentence structures with clear, distinct and varied vocabulary. * Uses proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling with very few if any errors. * Is well organized and makes excellent sense. Uses effective transitions where necessary.

To achieve a high "B" short essay: * Clearly establishes a main topic in a thesis statement or paragraph. Always stays on topic. * Supports the main points with good reasoning and many fitting examples and/or ideas. *Correctly uses a variety of sentence structures and clear varied vocabulary. * Uses proper grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization and spelling with few errors. * Is well organized and makes good sense. Uses transitions where necessary.

To acheive a "C+"/"B" short essay: * Establishes a main topic in the thesis statement or paragraph and mostly stays on the topic. * Uses some important examples and/or ideas to support the main points. * Uses suitable language and some variety of sentence structure and vocabulary. * Although there are occasional errors, there is a basic control of grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. * Is organized and makes sense. Uses transitions in most necessary instances.

To acheive a "C"/"C-": * Establishes a main topic that is not particularly clear or strong and the paper sometimes goes off topic. * Contains some knowledge and important examples and/or ideas but may also demonstrate some confused or illogical thinking. * Has limited development and contains predictable vocabulary using simple repetitive sentence structures. * Includes noticeable errors in the use of grammar, punctuation, captialization and spelling. * Makes some sense but loose or flawed organization makes it hard to read and understand completely.

To achieve a "D": * Contains a main topic which is not clear and the paper often goes off the topic * Uses few examples and/or ideas to support main points. * Demonstrates limited and/or incorrect use of vocabulary and sentence structures. Some language may be innappropriate for school or the assignment. * Frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. * Doesn't make much sense due to poor organization.

Failed to achieved a passing grade, i.e. "F": * Copied or plagiarized work. * Demonstrates a lack of a focused topic. * Demonstrates very limited knowledge, examples and ideas. * Shows a poor use of vocabulary and sentence structure or language innapporpriate for schoolwork or assignment. * Has many errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. * Is difficult to read and does not make sense due to lack of organization and excessive errors.
